- 1). Click "Start" on your Windows toolbar, type "Computer" and then press "Enter." Navigate to any .DOC or .DOCX file on your computer. You may need to change program associates for both filetypes.
- 2). Right-click on a document file and select "Properties." While on the "General" tab, click the "Change" button next to the words "Opens with." You will see a list of recommended programs to select from, though you can also click the bottom "Browse..." button and find another program on your computer to associate with documents. Click on the program you want to associate with the .DOC or .DOCX filetype and then click the "Okay" button.
- 3). Click the "Apply" button on the "General" tab and then click "OK" to exit that menu. Double click on that file and verify that it opens in the correct program. If you changed the .DOCX filetype association but also have some .DOC files on your computer, find a .DOC file and change its association as well.
