How to Train a Dog With an Innotek Invisible Fence

    • 1). Take the collar outside without the dog and find the edge of the containment area, where the warning light comes on and the collar beeps. Make adjustments to the collar to get the distance from the actual invisible fence at which you want to give your dog a warning. Insert the training flags at the spot where you first hear the warning beeps. Watch the Innotek training video that comes with the system.

    • 2). Place training probes where the standard collar probes go. The training probes do not deliver a shock. They let your dog learn where the boundaries are without inflicting pain and causing fear. Turn the collar transmitter to the on position. Attach a leash to the collar. Put the collar on the dog.

    • 3). Walk your dog to the boundary, pulling it back when the collar beeps. Continue this lesson for several days until the dog backs away from the boundary area itself when it hears the beeping.

    • 4). Change the training probes on the collar to the standard probes. Put the collar on the dog. Attach the leash to the collar and go out with the dog. Walk it to the edge of the containment area. Have a friend or family member run from the yard. Do not encourage the dog to follow, but if it does, let it go until it receives a stimulation from the collar and retreats back to the safe area.

    • 5). Keep your dog on the leash and take it in the yard with some distractions such as children playing outside of the containment area, someone walking another dog past the area. Never let anyone call the dog, but let it approach the fence line on its own. Praise it if it stays inside the containment area.

    • 6). Plan as many different types of distractions as possible. Every dog has different triggers, so to be sure you use the right ones as a distraction to train your dog: Have people drive by, run around outside the area, play ball, eat or ride bikes.

    • 7). Take your dog into the containment area without a leash and stay with him while having others create distractions outside the containment area.

    • 8). Remove the training flags from the boundary area. Continue to observe your dog until you are certain it understands the boundaries.
