Signs of a Website Being Hacked
- The browser that you are using to view the website may provide you with a warning before you view the site. The warning may state, "This site may harm your computer," or other messages indicating that the website is not trusted. If you've visited the website successfully before and are receiving a warning message, it may indicate that the website has been hacked.
- If you type in a URL to visit a certain website, and end up on a website that is not the one that you intended, there is a chance that the website you were trying to visit was hacked. A hacker can redirect you from one URL to another without notice, so that you would never land on the page that you intended.
- If you load the website and receive a pop-up or box that asks you to save or download a file, the site may be hacked. A hacker can change a website so that malicious software is offered by the site, which could infect your computer if you download the malware. If you suspect a website has been hacked, do not download anything.
- A hacked website may look unfamiliar, or have content that is not in line with the website. For example, a website may have links to advertisements or downloads with no true content. A website that contains nothing but spam could have been hacked. If you've visited a website previously and it looks significantly different and seems like spam, the website may have been hacked.
