'(500) Days of Summer' DVD
This non-formulaic romantic comedy pairs Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. The nonlinear narrative structure reveals early on that the relationship fails, but the interest lies in how that came about. The film chronicles the 500 days that elapse from the time Tom (Gordon-Levitt) first sees Summer (Deschanel) until they finally part ways. The number of days into the relationship is periodically shown to help viewers with the scrambled chronology. From the beginning, Tom seems to feel Summer is the only one for him, but she seems more into just having fun.More »'All About Steve' DVD
Sandra Bullock plays an aggressively wacky character named Mary Horowitz in this comedy, and Bullock is supported by Bradley Cooper and Thomas Haden Church. Mary is a creator of crossword puzzles who talks excessively, uses obscure words and sprinkles her conversation with esoteric factoids. Also, she dresses strangely, including wearing bright red boots. But she meets and falls for a cable-news cameraman named Steve (Cooper) and chases him around as he goes on his assignments. When deaf children get trapped in a cave-in, Mary redeems herself.More »'District 9' DVD
The title of this sci-fi film refers to a shantytown refugee camp in Johannesburg where over a million extraterrestrials reside. The camp is operated by a private corporation, which performs some medical experiments there. The extraterrestrials, who resemble large bipedal insects and speak a subtitled language, arrived in a spaceship back in the 1980s. Humans generally hate the aliens and derogatorily call them "prawns." The story focuses on Wikus, who is a human altered by accidental contact with an alien substance, and an extraterrestrial known as Christopher Johnson.More »'Extract' DVD
Mike Judge (Office Space, TV's King of the Hill) wrote and directed this comedy set in the blue-collar world. Jason Bateman plays the starring role, and he is supported by Ben Affleck, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig and J. K. Simmons. Joel (Bateman) owns and operates a small factory that makes flavorings, and an employee loses a testicle in an accident there. Joel's wife Suzie (Wiig) won't have sex with him, and he lusts after a new employee (Kunis), who has her own agenda. At the urging of his bartender (Affleck), Joel gets a swimming-pool guy to try to seduce Suzie.More »
