Georgia Law on Scrap Tires
- The Georgia law requires retail dealers to collect a $1 fee and to keep accurate records for every replacement tire sold. Anyone who generates scrap tires must have a Scrap Tire Generator Identification Number issued by the state Environmental Protection Division (EPD). Additionally, anyone transporting scrap tires must have a carrier permit issued by the state Director of the EPD (see Reference 2).
- A carrier permit is not required of approved municipal solid waste collectors, private individuals moving their own scrap tires, retail tire dealers moving their company scrap tires, a company not in the tire- handling business moving their own scrap tires and local, state and federal government are exempt from needing a carrier permit (see References 1, 2).
- Whole tires are banned from landfills in Georgia. The scrap tires are processed by companies into chips for industrial boiler fuel, septic tank material, road paving material, rubber mats and running tracks (see Reference 3).
