The first step in making cold process (CP) soap is to gather all the necessary materials. You will need safety goggles, rubber gloves, a stainless steel pot, a glass bowl, a glass measuring bowl, a scale, rubber stirring utensils, thermometer, the soap batch recipe, the recipe ingredients, and soap molds.

Refer to your recipe and fill the glass measuring bowl with the appropriate amount of distilled water. Also add the appropriate amount of lye and stir. Let the lye and water solution to cool down a bit. Meanwhile, weight the oils and melt them in the stainless steel pot with the stove on medium heat. Stir the lye and water solution slowly into the stainless steel pot of melted oils, and continue to stir for about fifteen minutes or until the mixture begins to thicken and reach a pudding-like consistency. This stage is known as the trace stage, and it can be recognized by patterns left in the soap mixture as it is stirred.

Once the mixture has reached this stage, add the essential oils, fragrances or herbs, and pigments, and then pour the mixture into the molds. Keep the molds somewhere warm, and allow them to cure or harden for one to two days. After the soap has hardened, remove it from the mold and cut it into bars. Once you have cut the soap into bars, they need to cure for about four to six weeks in a cool, dry, and dark location. Place them in a single layer on a beer flat or tray lined with paper towel. Turn them each week so that all sides are exposed to the air.

You see, the cold process method is a combination of an art and science. And this is how cold process soap making is done.
