How to Read a Pattern

Reading a pattern can be confusing and sometimes challenging.
This is a very important step in learning how to sew.
In order to determine one's proper size before even selecting and reading a pattern, basic measurements must be taken.
If you are new to sewing and are sewing a basic garment such as a skirt with an elastic waistband or pajama bottoms, it would be wise to measure your waist just below the navel, and your hips at the widest part.
If you are making any sort of blouse or top, then measuring the around the entire chest would be beneficial.
One common mistake that some beginning sewers make when they do not measure themselves is that they "assume" that the pattern size will be the same size as their regular clothing.
This simply is not true.
Patterns tend to run smaller than one's regular size.
Therefore, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of measuring.
Once you have taken your measurements, record them for future reference.
When you pick up a pattern envelope, one must look at the size based on their actual measurements.
Another factor that must be considered is the fabric length.
Depending upon whether or not the fabric is 45 inches wide or 60 inches wide will determine how much yardage one would need.
For example, if you have to get fabric that is 60 inches wide, generally speaking, you will need less fabric than if you had to get material that is 45 inches wide.
If you are unsure, ask for help.
Most fabric and sewing centers can assist you.
The most important thing is not to be afraid or intimidated.
There is always a "first" time for everything.
The more you select patterns, the more comfortable you will become.
