Tips on Replacing Roofs

    Old Shingle Removal?

    • Removing your old shingles is often a backbreaking process, as not only do you have to remove them but you have to properly dispose of them. So the question is: do you even have to remove your old shingles in the first place? The answer: maybe. It depends on local building codes and the number of shingle layers on your roof already.

Leaving shingles on has its advantages as well: not only do you save money and time by not removing them in the first place, but you'll have yet another barrier against possible leakage and a tiny bit more insulation to the roof itself. However, shingles are heavy and leaving the old ones on while adding new ones on top of that can create sagging and ultimate structural damage to the roof itself, which you definitely don't want. So take this into account and get a second or third opinion if you're undecided.

    Buy Wholesale Shingles

    • Track down the place where the roofing companies go to buy their shingles and talk with the manager there. Managers are usually surprised to see someone who wants to shingle their roof themselves these days but they'll also happily give you a lesson on what shingles work best in which conditions and how to apply them.

Visit during the mid-morning or mid-afternoon while roofers are at their job sites. The price per square (this is per 100 square feet) is an excellent sign of quality as well. Lay the shingles out on the ground and stand back or look at them from different angles to make sure you like the way they will look on your roof.

    Working Conditions

    • Replacing a roof can also be a dangerous job. Make sure you are working on the roof replacement with at least one other person, who can spot you on a ladder or offer you help if you hurt yourself or fall. Never work, even with an assistant, during rain, thunder, or fog. Don't work in winter when it is below freezing as ice can or snow can form and cause slippery conditions.

As singles need a certain amount of heat to stick to the roof itself, a nail gun may need to be employed to stick everything down firmly. Make sure you know how to operate it, along with other tools, effectively and safely before using it on a rooftop.
