    • 1). Use scissors to cut a patch large enough to cover the hole plus a 1-inch overlap all the way around. Be sure to use the same fabric and to place it in the same pattern or weave as the original fabric. If you can't get an exact fabric match, a similar color or pattern should work.

    • 2). Position the fabric right side up and on the right side of the fabric. This means the fabric is on top of the fabric with the pattern facing out.

    • 3). Hold the patch in place with sewing pins. Always check that the fabric is covering the patch along the entire perimeter.

    • 4). Baste stitch the patch into place before removing the pins. Use a sensibly sized sewing needle and matching thread to loosely stitch around the edge of the patch.

    • 5). Utilize a sewing pencil or tracing wheel to indicate the desired finish sew line. This should be at least a 1/4 inch from the edge of the hole.

    • 6). Remove the patch from the fabric and fold in the raw edge to the sew line before basting. Use a sewing needle and thread to create a loose stitch that folds the raw edge underneath to create a clean border for the patch.

    • 7). Place the patch on top of the fabric and overhand sew the patch along the top of the fabric. Use small, tight, discreet basic stitches (under, through, across, down) to secure the patch before removing any remaining basting stitches.
