Crafts Made From Plywood
- An amazingly simple yet creative craft project is to make a plywood rug for a home office or dining room. The hard surface sits cleanly over carpet, providing a base that’s easy to roll chairs along and clean up after messy meals. Measure the area of floor you want to cover with plywood. Purchase a large piece of plywood at your local hardware or home improvement store. Stain the plywood sheet for color and design. Use a stencil that you like to add a colorful pattern to the stained plywood. After the paint dries, place the plywood rug in your office or dining room and enjoying swiveling around on it.
- Make a creative kitchen craft out of a small piece of plywood and a can of soup. Draw a wide hammer shape onto the plywood. Cut it out with a handsaw or utility knife, depending on the width of plywood with which you’re working. Draw a second, narrower hammer inside of the cutout shape. Place a can of soup inside of the hammer head and trace it to form the shape of the inside hammer head. Cut out the inside hammer. Sand the plywood with 150-grit sandpaper. Stain the plywood and allow it to dry for 24 hours. Place wood glue on the top and bottom of the soup can and stick it in the inner hammer head shape. Allow the hammer to dry, then set it on your kitchen counter as a creative spoon rest or just as a decorative item.
- Use a piece of 32-inch-by-24-inch plywood as the base for a clean, functional bulletin board. Gather the plywood, two-thirds-inch-wide screen molding, a ruler, pencil, hammer, nails, paint or stain and wood glue for the project. Cut the plywood to size and stain or paint it in a color that pleases you. Create molding strips that are 1 inch wide and equal in length to the top and bottom edges of the plywood board. Paint or stain them in contrasting colors for an added design element. After the paint dries, hammer the strips to the top and bottom edges of the board. Attach five strips of two-thirds-inch-wide screen molding to the board to create raised edges to which you can stick business cards, photos, cards and notes. The strips allow you to tack up items without needing push pins or tape.
- A plywood boomerang is easy to make and provides hours of entertainment. Get a small piece of plywood, a jigsaw and a hand rasp. Draw a boomerang on the plywood surface. Cut out the shape with the jigsaw. Use the hand rasp to create 45-degree angle grades on the ends of the boomerang. Sand and stain the boomerang, or sand and paint a pattern or design onto it, if desired.
