How to Prepare a Window for Repainting
- 1). Apply a chemical paint stripper to the old paint on your window frame.
- 2). Let the chemical stripper sit for as long as manufacturer recommends. Sometimes, this can be several hours.
- 3). Use a plastic scraper to remove the chemical stripper and the old paint beneath it.
- 4). Sand the window frame using 120 grit sandpaper. This removes any excess paint and gets the surface ready for the new paint. It helps rough up the surface so that the new paint will adhere.
- 5). Get into crevices in the window frame that sandpaper cannot reach using a soft sanding block. This ensures the new paint will apply nicely to all areas of the window frame.
- 6). Clean up the dust from the sanding process using a shop vacuum.
- 7). Dust around the edges of the window.
- 8). Place masking tape around the edges of the glass of the window to ensure that you won't have to scrape paint off the glass with a razor when you are finished.
- 9). Dust around the edges of the window.
