DIY Floor Paint
- 1). Sand the entire floor with 220-grit sandpaper. Use an electric sander if possible to accomplish this task faster. Vacuum the floor or sweep thoroughly to remove all of the dust created during sanding.
- 2). Apply painter's tape to the walls or baseboards just above the floor to protect them from the floor paint.
- 3). Paint one coat of sanding sealer onto the entire floor with a paint roller. This product will seal the wood and prevent it from absorbing the paint which could result in an uneven or blotchy appearance. Wait for the sanding sealer to dry, at least two hours, before you begin painting.
- 4). Apply two coats of latex paint to the floor with a paint roller, allowing each coat to dry completely before you apply the next. Use any type of latex interior or exterior paint; you do not need to purchase paint specifically made for floors.
- 5). Use additional colors of latex paint to add a design to the dry floor, if desired.
- 6). Seal the floor with a layer of water-based, clear-coat polyurethane applied with a paint roller. Read the back of the label to ensure the polyurethane is intended for use on floors; some types of polyurethane may not withstand heavy foot traffic.
- 7). Apply two additional coats of polyurethane to the floor. Let each coat dry for at least 24 hours before you walk on the floor.
- 8). Pull the tape away from the baseboards when the floor is finished.
