• Mildew is a common bathroom fungus that grows in a warm, damp environment. It can cover tiles and shower curtains in a blue-green growth and can release a musty smell. If left untreated, it can permanently discolor and damage fabrics, according to the University of Georgia.
  
  

Removal

• To remove mildew growing in your bathroom, mix 1/2 cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water and wash down the affected area. Rinse with clear water and dry the area thoroughly. If you have mildew growing on your shower curtain, brush away the fungus from the surface. You can coat any stain with lemon juice and salt, then leave it in the sun to dry. Once dry, rinse the treated area with water.
  
  

Prevention

• Keeping your bathroom dry and well ventilated is key to preventing fungus from coming back. Run an exhaust fan when the shower is on, or open a window. Wiping down the walls of the shower with a sponge or a squeegee can help reduce moisture levels in the bathroom, according to Alison Haynes in "Clean Sweep."
