A Worthwhile Interview With the Filmmakers

The only bonus material on the DVD is a 30-minute interview of Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne conducted by Frédéric Bonnaud. Although originally broadcast October 17, 2005, on France Inter, the major French public radio network, the interview was also recorded on video. That video is what is on the DVD, permitting us to see the participants and listen to them speaking French while we read a translation in English subtitles.

It emerges that L'Enfant was shot in Seraing, a city once famous for its steel mills, and there used to be a saying: "When Seraing sneezes, Belgium is sick." Nowadays, however, the city is known for its endemic unemployment. The Dardennes also mention their fascination with filming trivial, concrete things. In addition, they say that although their characters may be unlikable and down on their luck, the movies are always made in a way that the life force still comes through. The interview reveals interesting production details as well. For example, about 40 different babies, two to three weeks old, were used in filming L'Enfant.

Below I have given the details for the L'Enfant DVD.
