Why Should I Use Handmade Soaps Instead of Commercial Soaps?
Until the beginning of the last century, most soaps were made at home using fats from cooking - animal fats - as these were readily available.
With the outbreak of World War I a shortage of fats now needed for the production of armaments meant an alternative was needed.
Petroleum distillates were used to make these first synthetic soaps called detergents.
The soaps you buy at the shop usually are detergent soaps containing foaming agents known as sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS - moderate acute health hazard for skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation), synthetic perfumes and other chemicals such as propylene and butylene glycols and parabens (linked to cancer).
These soaps also have natural glycerine collected, removed and purified and sold as a valuable by-product.
Now oils are extracted from vegetables, grains and nuts which are chemically superior and of a higher quality.
Handmade soaps combine animal or vegetable oils, lye, water and plant extracts and oils.
It retains its natural glycerine, one of the best skin softeners.
Mass produced soap companies take the glycerin out of their product and use it as a byproduct.
It is then replaced with alcohol.
The alcohol is what makes your skin feel really tight after you've used their soap.
Hand made soaps leave the glycerin in, and allows it to be a naturally occurring emollient.
Thus is moisturizing and helps to leave your skin soft.
Try leaving a bar of soap bought from the shop on the shower shelf for a couple of weeks and see the result - what you get is a dry cracked bar of soap.
Try the same with natural handmade soap - the bar will never crack or dry out as it retains its emollient properties.
As opposed to drying out, you will notice that the soap actually attracts moisture to it.
Most often you will find that handmade soaps are specifically made to cater for individual skin types.
When handmade soap is made, it is often made in smaller batches (30-50 soaps per batch) as opposed to other commercial soaps which are made in large batches (2000+ soaps per batch).
Because handmade batches are smaller they can be altered and changed, creating a larger variety of soaps.
Unfortunately this often increases the price of each soap.
Handmade soaps will often contain more nutrious and beneficial ingredients than commercial soaps.
The soaps made by Juddarnje contain natural products such as clays, honey, fruit nectars, plant nectars, natural oils such as avocado, macadamia, almond and more.
Next time you are deciding whether to choose commercial or handmade, remember commercial may be cheaper BUT handmade will be far more beneficial to your skin.
