    • 1). Figure out which rooms you want the great room to function as. This helps you define what furniture you need. Break apart the room into multiple invisible zones to help you space the furniture.

    • 2). Add comfortable furniture for a living room feel, such as a sofa, loveseat and plush chairs. Put a coffee table in front of a large sofa for added convenience.

    • 3). Put in an entertainment center with a TV and stereo if this is a function you want for the great room. Center these elements in front of the sitting area.

    • 4). Include a dining table near the kitchen. A dining table can be found often between the kitchen and living room area of the great room. This location adds to the function of the space.

    • 5). Set up the home office space to the side of the great room, perhaps in a small alcove. This allows the computer to be set up where someone can have some privacy, but still be part of the room and the conversation.

    • 6). Consider a play area in your great room if you have small children. A space with toys and games can ensure that your family is always all together, even when the kids are playing.

    • 7). Keep functionality and comfort at the front of your mind when choosing furniture for your great room. One of the benefits of this type of room is family togetherness and less maintenance in the home.
