  Exterior moldings serve to frame the style of a structure. Some styles are subtle and blend in while other moldings contrast and are the focal point of the structure. While any molding style can be installed on almost any structure, the choice in molding should be informed by the style of the home it will be applied to.
  
  

Different Styles of Molding

• Exterior moldings should be used to complement the over all architectural style of the structure. Most homes fall into three broad categories, classical, contemporary and formal.
  
  Classical moldings typically frame the top and bottom of the structure. You can also use vertical moldings and architectural details, such as columns, spaced symmetrically to break up the space. Classical moldings use simple, straight lines and geometric shapes in repetitive patterns.
  
  Formal moldings are typically more ornate. Carved sections may be repeated in a mirrored fashion with an identical, yet reversed, pattern on right and left. Formal moldings are used to frame sections of the structure, such as doors and windows.
  
  Contemporary moldings tend to be smaller and less decorative. They are installed in areas that require seams and gaps to be hidden between sections in the construction or joining two different materials. They are designed to be unobtrusive and their contribution to the look is subtle.
  
  

Choosing Molding Color Schemes

• Choosing the right color for moldings can have a big impact on your exterior décor.
  
  Monotone color schemes work well for classical molding styles. Moldings can be painted the exact same color as walls or in a slightly lighter or darker shade of the same color for a subtle effect. Contemporary moldings are also frequently painted this way.
  
  Using a high contrast color scheme, such as black moldings on a white wall, emphasizes the molding. Formal moldings are often finished using this technique. It puts the focus on elements such as windows and entrances.
  
  Complementary color schemes use completely different colors for moldings and walls. A device called a color wheel can help in choosing complementary colors. Colors on opposite sides of a color wheel are considered complementary. Formal and contemporary moldings are frequently decorated in this way.
  
  

Different Molding Materials

• Moldings can be made from a variety of materials. The most common are wood, stone or concrete and Styrofoam or other plastics such as vinyl.
  
  Wood moldings require the most maintenance, but are lighter and more versatile than some other options. Wood is common in all three categories of molding and is the most popular. The entire look of wood can be changed with a simple coat of paint.
  
  Carved stone and molded concrete moldings are typically found in formal and classical styles. The heavy look of stone and concrete moldings lends itself to larger, more dramatic structures. Changing the look of these moldings is generally not easy.
  
  Foam and plastic moldings are inexpensive, can be created in any shape and are usually able to be painted for a change of pace. They can be purchased in all three styles and do not require maintenance other than cleaning.
