  Cats are incessantly curious animals and will investigate anything within their reach, including houseplants. Sadly, cats can be sickened or even killed by ingesting toxic houseplants. Fortunately, there are a number of houseplants that are attractive, easy to care for and safe for cats. If you are a cat owner who is considering decorating with houseplants, consider one of these nontoxic plants.
  
  

African Violet

• African violets are bright, colorful plants with shiny green leaves that bloom in various shades of purple, yellow, magenta and white. African violets are well suited to growing indoors and thrive in daytime temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, with night temperatures above 60 F. African violets should be planted in pots with adequate drainage holes and watered by placing the pot in a shallow dish of lukewarm water and allowing the water to soak in from the bottom. Pouring water directly on the leaves can damage plants. African violets need regular fertilization and are susceptible to red spiders and mealy bugs.
  
  

Bamboo Palm

• Bamboo palm is a lush, green plant that can add an air of tropical atmosphere to any room. Plants consist of thin stalks with narrow feather-like leaves. Place bamboo palms in indirect bright light at a constant temperature. Plants prefer soil that is moist, but not wet, and need regular fertilization. Bamboo palms are susceptible to spider mites and mealy worms. With proper care, bamboo palms can last several years.
  
  

Peace Begonia

• Peace begonias grow bright pink blossoms that last for most of the spring and summer season. Peace begonias are fairly easy to care for. They need moist, well-drained soil and regular fertilization and thrive in bright light. Their preferred placement is within 2 feet of an eastern- or southern-facing window. Peace begonia are susceptible to thrips, spider mites, mealy bugs, whiteflies, mold and mildew.
