How do I Grow Vegetables Indoors in a Pot?
- 1). Purchase seed for compact, short-season vegetables that do not have higher lighting requirements. Plants such as lettuce or broccoli will be more successful indoors than plants with higher lighting and space requirements such as okra or corn.
- 2). Place a pottery shard in the bottom of a container to keep soil from washing away with water. Containers should be roomy enough to hold soil for your plants. You can grow radishes or green onions in shallow containers, such as a 9-inch square cake pan, while you will have to grow a tomato plant in a 5 -gallon bucket. Fill the container with potting soil. Hollow out planting furrows or drill holes in your container and plant seeds at the proper depth. Most seeds should be planted three times as deep as the seed's width at the widest point.
- 3). Water your container so that the potting soil is as damp as a wrung-out sponge.
- 4). Place the container beneath a grow light so that the light is less than 12 inches from the soil. As the plants grow, move the grow light so that it is always between 6 and 12 inches from the top of the plant. This will ensure that the plant receives enough light.
- 5). Put your grow light on a timer so that the vegetables will receive adequate amounts of both light and darkness. Flowering vegetables such as tomatoes require eight hours of darkness daily, as well as adequate sunlight to set tomato blossoms.
- 6). Check your soil daily and water as needed to keep the soil damp but not saturated. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) in the water of your plants to feed them.
- 7). Harvest your vegetables continually to keep them producing. Some plants, such as cucumbers, will stop forming new vegetables if they go unharvested.
