Wonder what that massive, jade-colored ship hull on the Oosterdok (Eastern Dock) is? As if the architecture weren't an attraction in itself, that hull also houses the Science Center NEMO, a favorite museum for children and their adult companions. In its five floors of interactive science and media exhibits, visitors experience some of the best educational entertainment that Amsterdam has to offer.

NEMO's mission is to allow children from 6-16 to "explore, experiment and experience" the world and the science behind it. Visitors learn by activity with science experiments conventional and unconventional, as well as with music and video production in the Media Lab. Scientifically curious adults are also invited to join the fun, and it's not uncommon to see adults even without children traipse about the science center.

A calendar of lectures, workshops and theater productions rounds out the activities at Science Center NEMO; see the NEMO web site for the latest news. The center also offers facilities like cafes and cafeterias for its visitors, as well as a roof terrace with spectacular views on the water. For science-savvy families, NEMO is a can't-miss destination in Amsterdam.

• By foot - Follow Prins Hendrikkade eastward from Amsterdam Central Station; turn left onto Oosterdok, and follow the street as it curves northward toward the museum location.
