    iPledge Program

    • A prescription is required to purchase Accutane, and the patient must first register with a program called iPLEDGE before beginning the regimen. This program requires that you sign a consent form stating you are aware of Accutane's risks.

You must be able to keep appointments with your doctor every month to obtain a new prescription, since each lasts only a month.

If you are woman of childbearing age, you will be required to choose two forms of approved birth control while in the program and must consent to a monthly pregnancy test while enrolled and before beginning Accutane. You must have a negative pregnancy test 30 days before you start taking Accutane. A pregnancy test is also required before each prescription is refilled, right after you take your last dose of Accutane, and again 30 days later.

    Benefits

    • Accutane is derived from Vitamin A, a vitamin that occurs in the body naturally. Since Accutane is natural, it does not stay in the body for long periods and most negative effects are usually reversible. Accutane works by reducing the size of oil glands and the amount of oil produced. Along with limiting the amount of oil, it prevents pores from clogging by slowing the speed with which skin cells reproduce.

    Treatment

    • Take Accutane according to the prescription, never take it longer than prescribed and never double the dose to make up for one that was missed. Accutane usually takes about four to six months to work effectively, but it may be prescribed for a longer period. Allowing the pill to dissolve could cause damage to the esophagus if not swallowed intact, so take Accutane with water during a meal.

    Effects

    • The side effects of Accutane include chapped skin, eyes and nose, which may or may not include nosebleeds. More severe symptoms may require treatment and include dark urine, diarrhea, raised cholesterol, allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, fainting, constant vision and hearing problems (that can become permanent), muscle weakness, severe stomach pain, jaundice, vomiting, seizure or stroke.

    Warning

    • For woman who are pregnant or may become pregnant, the use of Accutane can cause severe deformities, death and premature birth. Do not donate blood or breastfeed until a month after use of Accutane. Since skin is sensitive during the use, you should avoid sunlight and ultraviolet waves. While using Accutane, also avoid waxing, dermabrasion and laser treatments.
