How to Cut Limestone With a Chisel
- 1). Mark a line where you want to cut the limestone with crayon. Crayon will not stain the stone like ink from a pen or marker would.
- 2). Lay the stone onto sandbags. The sand reduces vibration in the stone when it is being struck with the chisel and protects the limestone from breaking.
- 3). Hold the point chisel at a 45-degree angle to the face of the stone and score the stone along the crayon mark.
- 4). Chip along the score line with a tooth chisel. Hold the tooth chisel parallel to the score line at a 45-degree angle and strike it with the mallet several times. Then reverse the chisel to the opposite side of the score line and strike it a few more times.
- 5). Continue chiseling along the score line using the alternating angles until you reach the edge of the stone.
- 6). Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you completely split the rock.
- 7). Remove any tooth chisel marks from the edge of the stone by chipping the corrugated shapes off with a flat chisel.
