- Hosta, also commonly known as plantain lily and hosta lily, are a large genus of flowering perennials in the lily family. Hosta thrive in shade and moist soil and grow in a wide array of different hues and leaf patterns. They are prized for their large arching leaves, long life, and their ability to propagate themselves via underground rhizomes and to naturalize in a landscape. Their foliage comes in many shades of green, blue green, gold, creamy butter yellow and white.
- Green hostas come in many hues of green and include: Capitata, clausa, fortunei, hypoleuca, kikutii, longissima, long pipes, minor, nakaiana, montana, tardiflora, tibai, ventricosa and venusta.
- Some of the most common and popularly grown blue-toned hosta species and cultivars include: Sieboldiana, aoki, big daddy, blue boy, blue angel, blue moon, blue cadet, blue wumbrelas, blue wedgewood, bressingham blue and dorset blue.
- Variegated hosta are a combination of some shade of green and white, though there can be green and yellow or even yellow and blue variegations as well. Some of the most popular cultivars of variegated hosta include: Crispula, seiboldii, undulata, albomarginanta, albopicta, antioch, aureomaculata, aureomarginata, aureo-nebulosa, aurora borealis, christmas tree and decorata.
- There are fewer but still several hosta that produce foliage in the gold and yellow spectrum and these include: Plantaginea, August moon, bright glow, Chinese sunrise, gold drop and gold edger.
