Design Tips for Mobile Homes

Get Rid of the Paneled Wall Look

    • According to the website Living a Better Life, nothing screams, "mobile home!" more than paneled walls. To remedy the look, remove the strip of vertical molding between each panel of wallboard. Then use a putty knife and joint compound, which you can purchase at a hardware or home improvement store, to fill in the gaps between each wallboard panel. If you find it difficult to apply the joint compound seamlessly with the wall, apply a wall texture product over all the walls and paint.

    Go Light

    • The color of a wall can make a big difference in how a room "feels" and looks. Light colors, according to My Interior Decorator, can make a room seem larger. As a result, painting the inside of your mobile home can quickly and easily create a loftier look. If you shudder at the thought of all-white walls, consider painting the walls a light yellow, blue or green color.

    Go with Glass

    • According to HGTV, incorporating mirrors into your décor can fill your mobile home with natural light and make a room seem larger. Consider hanging a mirror horizontally on an unoccupied or accent wall. In addition, tables with glass tops that have light-colored, thinner frames can make a room seem more spacious. This is because they add to the flow of a room and do not have thick lines or dark colors that quickly draw the eye.

    Emulate Elegance

    • Break the stereotypes associated with mobile homes and show off your creativity. For example, hang chandeliers or hanging light fixtures throughout your home to add light. Use antiques you find as decorative elements, and do not be afraid to mix modern and vintage elements together. Place a salvaged fireplace mantel onto an accent wall and paint it the same color as the wall. Then, place an entryway or side table in front of the mantel with a nice chair on either side of it. This will create a new, elegant reading area in your mobile home. As an extra touch, consider hanging a large mirror above the mantel and place candles, books or framed pictures on the mantel itself.
