How to Make Mittens Out of Felt Material

    • 1). Lay a piece of notepaper on your work table. Center your hand on the paper with your fingers together and the thumb sticking out. Trace around your hand and 2 inches past your wrist using a pencil. The width below the bottom of the hand should be the same as the bottom of the hand. This will ensure that the mitten will fit over the widest portion of the hand. Remove your hand and trace around the drawn shape again, enlarging it 1inch. Cut out the shape for your mitten pattern.

    • 2). Place two layers of felt on your work table and pin your mitten pattern to it. If your felt has a design on it, layer the pieces with the right sides together. Cut out the mitten shape. Repeat for a second mitten to complete a pair.

    • 3). Pin the edges of each mitten set together, except for the straight wrist edge. Starting at the wrist, sew the edges together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. End on the other side of the wrist. Back stitch at the beginning and end of the stitches to prevent the seams from unraveling when you wear the mittens.

    • 4). Trim off the seam, 1/8 of an inch from the sewn seam. This will remove bulk and allow the mittens to hold their curved shape when turned right side out.

    • 5). Turn the mittens right side out and press with a warm iron. Fold a 1/4-inch hem to the inside wrist of the mittens and pin. Topstitch the folded hem to complete.
