How To Make a Woodpile
- 1). Find a location for your woodpile that will provide support and airflow and will keep the wood off the dirt and grass. Ideal sites are along a fence, on a concrete slab or against a tree, and should be in a sunny and breezy location.
- 2). Lay a base material such as wood pallets or metal beams if a base isn't already in place. Situate the material to bring your woodpile a few inches off the ground so air can circulate underneath, keeping an even and level surface for your wood to rest on.
- 3). Stack the first layer of wood, cut ends facing out and bark side facing up, if the wood is split. Stack the second layer, placing the wood so it overlaps the wood on the first layer and sits in the groove between two pieces. Leave small gaps in the woodpile to allow air to flow through freely and speed the drying process.
- 4). Stack the third layer in the same manner, and continue stacking until your pile is complete, making sure that the cut ends line up and the pile is level and stable.
- 5). Cover your woodpile using a tarp, shingles or extra wood pieces, making sure to cover the top but leaving the sides open to enable air flow. A peak shape on top of your woodpile will help shed any water that builds up over the season and keep the wood dry.
