How to Compare Indoor TV Antennas
- Television antennas receive either very high frequency (VHF) or ultra high frequency (UHF) signals. According to the HD Antenna Labs website, VHF indoor antennas are the directional rabbit-ear style and will receive channels 2-13. UHF antennas collect channels 14-51. Antennas are available as either VHF, UHF, or a combo of the two types. High-definition will be available using either type as long as your local channel stations broadcast in that format.
- Directional and multidirectional antennas are available. Directional antennas will need to be adjusted when the channel is changed, but have longer viewing ranges. Multidirectional antennas are able to receive a signal from all directions, which eliminates the need to adjust the antenna, but the viewing range is shorter. Amplifiers can be added or built-in to boost signals in some cases.
- Antenna Web's website recommends purchasing antennas that are Consumer Electronics Association approved. Look for a seal with the words, "Meets or Exceeds CEA Performance Specifications for Indoor Antennas," circling a red check mark.
