How to Build a Robin Shelter

    • 1). Copy a robin shelter pattern (see Resources). This is the typical design used. It provides enough coverage from the rain and allows the robin to build a nest in an open area, as it prefers.

    • 2). Measure with a ruler and draw the shelter pattern on your untreated lumber exactly as shown. Cut out the pieces of wood with a jigsaw following safety precautions. You'll have a back, floor, roof and two sides when done.

    • 3). Use the protractor to set the sliding T-bevel to 18 1/2 degrees and mark the sides of the top of the 8-inch-wide top piece. Draw a line from one edge to the other along the width and cut off the strip of wood with the saw.

    • 4). Stand one side piece up and hold the top so that the beveled edge runs in a straight line down the back of the side piece. Nail the top to the side with the hammer and do the same with the second side.

    • 5). Flip the structure over and place the bottom piece of the robin shelter on top of the exposed sides and nail it. Turn the shelter on its side, place the back on the shelter and allow 2 inches of the back to overhang from the top of the structure.

    • 6). Nail the back of the robin shelter to all four pieces to complete the build. Make sure all pieces are flush against each other and nailed firmly.

    • 7). Find a desired location for the robin shelter, such as a structure in your yard or a tree trunk. Nail it at least 6 feet or more above the ground.
