  The Windows XP operating system offers more stability and much-improved features compared to its predecessors. Although there are some newer versions of Windows out on the market, including Windows Vista and the newly released Windows 7, Windows XP Home is still considered a very good operating system. You should also keep in mind that if you are going to upgrade your older operating system, you will need to meet the necessary requirements to do so.
  
  

Processor

• The processor is the primary element in your computer for carrying out commands for the computer's programs. To meet the minimum requirements for Windows XP, your computer will need at least 233 MHz of processor speed. Microsoft recommends Intel and AMD central processing units.
  
  

RAM

• The amount of memory, or RAM, in your computer is very important to the speed of your computer. Having enough of it can mean having a productive time using your computer, while not having enough means an unproductive experience. To upgrade to XP, you will need at least 128 megabytes of system memory.
  
  

Hard Disk

• If you are going to use your computer frequently, you will need a good amount of disk space to house your information. Windows XP requires at least 1.5 gigabytes of free hard drive space. Most computers running Windows XP nowadays have hard drives in the 50 to 500 GB range. More hard disk space is better.
  
  

Disk drives

• Windows XP predecessors required a floppy drive, but Windows XP requires at least a standard CD-ROM or CD/RW drive.
  
  

Resolution

• You will need a video adapter and a monitor with a resolution of at least 800x600.
  
  

Input Devices

• You will also need a standard keyboard and mouse for your Windows XP upgrade.
