Difference Between Amdro & Extinguish Ant Bait
- Amdro has insecticide-based ingredients for faster elimination of ants, but Extinguish's ingredients include insect growth regulators, which take longer to work. Amdro contains an inhibitor called hydramethylnon. An ant takes this back to its colony as food, causing immediate death to all ants that ingest it. Extinguish contains methoprene, a slower-acting insect growth regulator which stunts the queen ant's reproduction system, preventing the birth of new worker ants to replace the ones that die. The result is starvation and annihilation of the entire colony over time.
- Amdro begins working immediately to kill ants, but extermination takes longer when using Extinguish. This is mainly due to the chemical ingredients in each brand. Amdro takes about two to three weeks to kill worker ants and about four to six week to kill an entire colony. Extinguish's ingredients include an insect growth regulator, which takes longer to affect an ant population. With Extinguish, a colony diminishes within 8 to 10 weeks, and complete extermination can take a few more months.
- Because Amdro's ingredients include an insecticide that is harmful to humans if ingested, it should not be used on food crops, gardens, or any plants produced for commercial use or human and animal consumption. It is only for use on lawns, landscaped areas, parks, golf courses or other areas that are not cropland. Animals that graze in areas treated with Amdro cannot be used for food. In contrast, Extinguish has fewer application restrictions and can be applied in all types of areas, including crop land, commercial nurseries and sod farms. It is also safe for animal grazing areas and does not require grazing restrictions as Amdro does.
- Because Amdro is insecticide-based it usually only provides ant control for several months after application. The insect growth regulator in Extinguish creates a longer ant population maintenance window, lasting 6 to 12 months, depending on how quickly a new queen ant invades the treated area. This means that you can wait longer between applications of Extinguish.
