How Can I Get Rid Of Verruca?

Question:

I have had a verruca on the sole of my foot for about two years. I have tried various creams, gels and 'freezing' sprays, but have not been able to remove it. In fact it seems to have got bigger. Is there any other treatment I could try?

Answer:

Verrucas are small growths which occur at points of friction. They usually appear on the soles of the feet and sometimes on the palms or fingertips. If you looked under a microscope, you would see a formation like a cauliflower head with one main stalk. Verrucas are caused by a virus that enhances this growth pattern. Because they have roots buried deep inside the skin, any pressure on the heads is transmitted to the nerve endings in the raw flesh, which causes sharp pain. As the verruca is on the sole of your foot, wearing shoes, walking and standing must be extremely painful.

In India, until two decades ago, there was an interesting treatment. Traditional healers would sit in the market place or at village fairs removing verrucas from people's feet. They would use the horn of a goat with a tiny hole, as fine as a pinprick, at the tapered end. With their mouths placed over the wider end, they would suck out the verruca heads. It was such a precise operation and done with such skill that I was in awe every time I saw it done. They would then place the verrucas on a piece of white paper so that they could count them: a nominal fee was charged for each one removed. The patient was given a herbal solution to apply afterwards and that was the end of their verrucas. Unfortunately, that traditional skill is gone and it is a sad loss. Nowadays the preferred treatment is salicylica cid, in a paste or ointment. This was originally extracted from the bark of the willow tree; it is now synthetic and is a cousin of the aspirin. Applied topically, it corrodes the verrucas and eats into the flesh. Doctors also use liquid nitrogen to freeze the upper part of the verruca, then pull it all out as a solid piece. This is called cryotherapy. Sometimes surgery is done under local anaesthetic. All these options are likely to cause the return of the verucas because the virus remains in the body.

The key is to destroy the virus. Two colleagues of mine, Dr Taufiq Khan and his son Tariq, have spent decades between them researching the marigold flower and its antiviral properties. They have developed several products based on plants that they use as part of a therapy to treat verrucas and other problems of the feet, such as bunions, callouses and fungal nail infections. Initially the patient will be reared with Marigold Paste applied under a pad. Thereafter, application of Marigold Oil should prevent regrowth of the verrucas. I also recommend taking homoeopathic Hypericum 30 for 15 days, two tablets three times daily, to consolidate the treatment.

Alternatively, you may want to consult a reputable homoeopath. Some use Thuja and other preparations which treat verrucas from the core with miraculous effect.
