Measure the horizontal width of the chair's backrest from edge to edge using the yardstick. - 2). Measure the chair's backrest, vertically, from the bottom edge of the backrest, or the first open place at the backrest's base. Measure vertically from the top edge of the backrest to 1 foot below the base of the seat.
- 3). Add the two vertical dimensions together, then add 16 inches to the final length measurement. Add a 1/2 inch to the final measurement for the width, or horizontal measurement.

Wash and dry the fabric to preshrink it. - 2). Position the yardstick on the fabric and, using the tailor's chalk, mark the length and width you measured and calculated.
- 3). Trace along the yardstick's edge with the tailor's chalk, drawing a cutting line.

Cut the fabric, following the tailor's chalk line. - 2). Set the sewing machine to make a short, tight finishing stitch, such as a zigzag or blanket stitch. Sew all the way around the fabric's outer edge.
- 3). Fold one end forward and down the length of the chair's backrest. This is the first vertical measurement you took. Pin the sides together, using the straight pins. This will be the top of the cover.
- 4). Fold the other end of the chair cover up and over 12 inches from the bottom, so it forms a pocket on the opposite side of the fabric from the first fold. Pin the sides together.
- 5). Place the fabric flat on the table with the 12-inch bottom pocket facing down. Fold the fabric again, to form the second pocket, 8 inches above the bottom pocket's upper edge. Fold the fabric a second time, so the body of the cover goes back up. Pin the sides together.
- 6). Inspect the cover to make sure the top pocket faces the opposite direction of the two bottom pockets, then sew the sides together making a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Remove the pins as you sew. Make sure all layers of folded fabric catch in the seam.
- 7). Slide the chair cover onto the chair. Fold each piece of ribbon, yarn, or string in half to form the ties, and pin the folded spots to the cover, just below the chair's backrest, and just above the lower pocket. Remove the cover, and sew over the ties three times to attach them.
