The installation process described in part one of this series was simple and painless.
There is some merit to the "5 minute install claim".
Once installed, WordPress is ready for optimization.
The first thing to do is change the permalinks.
The default permalinks show a numeric coding for the pages and posts.
Permalinks containing text links are better for SEO purposes.
We suggest changing the permalinks to /%category%/%postname%/.
There are many different combination's, so consider this topic carefully.
You may have a situation where your site has been running for some time with the default WordPress permalink setup.
If this is the case, and you have articles and posts that have been indexed by search engines, you may not want to just select another permalink structure, before using a permalink migration tool to insure that your past links still work.
You can find a few useful tools at WordPress' plugin repository.
Next we begin installing plugins.
If you are installing multiple blogs, we might suggest that you "pre-install" the latest plugins in the correct folder of the uploaded WordPress source code.
When uploaded, you only need activate your plugins, upgrading them if necessary.
This saves a lot of time.
After downloading the latest WordPress source code, download the latest plugin zip files.
Keep in mind that these plugins consume memory, and you may need to be conservative in your choices.
Next you will unzip the plugin source code to the /wp-content/plugins folder.
Keep each plugin in its separate folder.
Also, consider installing a memory management plugin.
This tool will allow you to see and respond to memory problems before they adversely impact your site.
You can find more plugins than you will ever need at http://wordpress.

.
When optimizing your site for generating income, you obviously need traffic.
More traffic, more conversions.
Most of the traffic on your site will be generated by search engines.
You want to make sure that you know what the search engine is seeing and responding to on your pages.
Tools like XML Sitemaps, and KB-Robots.
txt give your blog a slight edge with search engines.
XML Sitemaps submits your updated sitemap to various search engines (like Google and Yahoo) which is very important for spider-visits.
The more your site changes, the more visits you can expect from search engine spiders.
A changing sitemap is great leverage in this process.
The KB-Robotext plugin writes a robots.
txt file for you on your web root.
You can edit the file with the convenient editor.
With a good robots.
txt file in place, you can "direct" search engine spiders along a desired route through your blog.
There are many more tools that can help get your site noticed by the major (and not so major) search engines.
See the plugin repository.
We generate some blog content with WP-Robot.
This excellent plugin is fee-based, but well worth the expenditure.
With WP-Robot, we are able to find content that we can publish on our site to complement our home-grown content.
WP-Robot also makes affiliate posting clean and easy.
Check out their website for more information.
Another area of WordPress configuration to consider carefully is themes.
There are many free themes at the WordPress site.
Themes are collections of PHP, HTML, CSS, and Javascript files that give a particular blog its look.
If you have experience with the technologies mentioned above, you can modify any theme, and even create your own.
For income generation, we settled on the Flexsqueeze of theme.
Flexsqueeze allows us to create sales pages in minutes, and whole sites in just a few hours.
We can turn AdSense ads on or off effortlessly, and can change the source to include affiliate offers from other providers.
So, to recap...
Round up all your favorite WordPress plugins and "bundle" them with the latest WordPress install package.
This will save some time because you won't have to hunt them down, just activate them.
Take control of memory and install a memory plugin that you can rely on.
Make use of the XML and KB-Robots.
txt plugins, for attracting and controlling spiders.
Consider using a commercial content-generating plugin like WP-ROBOT, and a set of themes like Flexsqueeze.
These will also save time and provide many valuable resources.
