Trivets and Coasters

• Wine corks make excellent trivets and coasters because they are durable, attractive and creative. The main difference between wine cork trivets and coasters is the size of the frame you use. You will need to buy a wooden frame from a craft store, discount store or even a thrift store. Buy a smaller frame to make a coaster. If you are unable to find a frame you like, you can also buy wooden or plastic squares from a craft store; simply glue the corks lengthwise to the frame backing or piece of wood. Create patterns by placing the corks at different angles, in different shapes or by rotating between horizontal and vertical placement. You may also want to glue a small dot of felt on the back in each corner to prevent the trivet or coaster from scratching your tables or countertops.
  
  

Cork Boards

• Cork boards are another great craft idea for wine corks because they both original and incredibly useful. For this project, you will need to purchase a larger wooden frame. You can buy specially-made frames for wine cork boards online at places such as AlPisanoArt.com, or you can simply buy a normal frame with backing from Michaels or another craft store. Similar to the trivets and coasters, you can glue the corks in any type of pattern. Buy a selection of pushpins to attach notes and lists to the cork board. You can hang the cork board in the kitchen next to the refrigerator, by the phone or near the front door for a quick, attractive reminder.
  
  

Wreaths

• To make a cork wreath, you will need to visit your local craft store to buy a foam wreath base. Stores such as Michaels or Joann Fabrics offer wreath bases in various sizes. If you have experience with a woodcutter, you can also purchase a thin piece of plywood and cut a heart shape, removing the center of the heart. Michaels also carries grapevine wreath bases, which you can use for an earthier look. Then, all you have to do is glue the wine corks in any pattern you choose. You can glue them lengthwise, or straight out by placing the glue on one end and attaching it to the wreath. Add accents to your wreath with ribbons, dried flowers or even grape leaves.
