What is a Backstitch? A backstitch is a very strong stitch used to bind two pieces of fabric together. Backstitching is ideal for seams that will undergo a lot of stress, like the underarms, crotch and hip seams. Backstitching can also be used to create decorative embroidery.

On a sewing machine - Sewing machines have a button that can be -pushed while sewing to reverse the fabric, making an easy 'backstitch'.

What is a Bar Tack? - Sewing Definition

What is a Bar Tack? Bar tack is a zigzagging stitch that reinforces points of stress on a garment. These are common on belt loops, at the tops and bottoms of pockets, and at the end of seams.

Bar tacks are made by using a simple zigzag stitch. If sewing through many or heavy fabrics, use a large needle.

What is a Barre? - Definition

What is a Barre? A barre is an imperfection in fabric that looks like a raised area or mark on that runs the length of the fabric, horizontally or vertically. Always check your fabric for barres before purchasing.

What causes a barre? In the manufacturing process, the tension of the machines weaving the fabric may have changed. It could be due to low-quality threads in the fabric. Either way, it means you should get a discount at the fabric store.

What is a Baste? A baste is a temporary stitch used to connect two pieces of fabric together, or hold the shape of fabric until it is permanently sewn. Basting can also be used to gather fabric.

Basting stitches are simply very long running stitches. These can be done by hand, or by setting your sewing machine to stitch very long stitches. Snip the threads every few inches and leave the thread ends to hang to prevent bunching.

What is Batting? Batting is the soft material sandwiched in between the back and front of quilts to make them oh-so-fluffy. Batting comes in different thicknesses, sold in packaged rolls or by the yard.

Batting is usually made of cotton or polyester, but can be made of fiberfill and wool. In addition to being used in quilts, batting can add volume to placemats, sleeves... whatever you need to add cushion or warmth to.
