Installation Instructions for Hanging a Door
- 1). Remove the trim from around the door opening with a flat chisel, pry bar and hammer.
- 2). Place a level on the threshold in order to adjust the length of the doorjamb. Use a circular saw to cut the bottom of the side jambs and bottom of the door to get clearance.
- 3). Nail a 1-inch by 2-inch board, called an alignment board, from the right side jamb to the left jamb on the side of the door that does not swing, extending 3 to 4 inches on each side.
- 4). Place the door into the door opening, called a rough opening, pushing it forward until the alignment board touches the wall on either side of the door. Have a friend hold the door firmly in place.
- 5). Place a level against the doorjamb to check for plumb, the up and down level.
- 6). Use wood shims next to the hinges to adjust the plumb of the door. Add wood shims one by one until the bubble in the level centers.
- 7). Hammer a nail into the doorjamb and through the wood shims on the hinge side near the top.
- 8). Hammer a second nail into the doorjamb and through the wood shims near the bottom of the door and then near the center hinge.
- 9). Check the door for plumb and install wood shims to the non-hinged side of the door until the bubble centers in the level.
- 10
