How to Sew Sashes to a Quilt Square

    • 1). Determine the preferred width of the sashes. The preferred border of a quilted blanket is about 2 inches. Add a seam allowance of at least ½ inch to the width to give a ¼-inch allowance on both sides of the sash.

    • 2). Line up the sash with the quilted square. Line it up so the inside of the square faces up and the inside of the sash faces the opposite direction. Pin the sides together with a ¼-inch seam allowance.

    • 3). Place the material on the sewing machine and sew the fabric together in a straight line. Always sew along the inside of the fabric with the outside of both the square and the sash facing each other. This will ensure that when the fabric is pulled open, the seam ends up on the inside.

    • 4). Repeat the process for the other side of the sash so the two squares are held together and bordered by the thin strip of fabric forming the sash.
