How to Carve a Bear Out of Soap
- 1). Draw a rectangle the same size as your bar of soap on a piece of paper. Within the rectangle, sketch a side view of a bear using photos or drawings from a book, magazine or website as a guide.
- 2). Place the sketch on top of your bar of soap and trace the outline using the tip of a paring knife, so that the lines cut into the soap enough to see.
- 3). Remove the paper. Hold the soap in your left hand -- or right, if you are left-handed -- and begin cutting off the areas of the soap around the outline. Hold the blade so that it faces away from you, and always carve outward.
- 4). Give the bear a dimension by rounding the edges. Cut small, thin pieces of soap away to shape it.
- 5). Smooth the surface of the bear with a rotary tool fit with a sanding tip or an emery board.
- 6). Add details to the bear using the tip of a craft knife, which you can use to "draw" fur, claws and facial features.
- 7). Allow the bear to dry out for a couple of days, then rub it with a paper towel to smooth it. If you want to preserve it and give it a glossy sheen, spray it with one to two coats of spray varnish.
