Sewing a Dart in a Dress
- 1). With a measuring tape, measure the area in the dress where you need to make a dart.
- 2). Draw a pattern for the size dart you need on tracing paper with a marker. The pattern for the dart should be in a V shape with a line from top to bottom through the center, which represents the fabric fold. The line should be the amount of fabric you are taking in. Cut out the pattern with scissors.
- 3). Flip the dress inside out. Pin the garment along the lines of the paper pattern. You can also draw the pattern with a fabric marker on the inside of the garment. Pull the pins out once the pattern is marked.
- 4). Sew the dart in place with a sewing machine. Make sure you follow the pins or the lines you drew. If you are making more than one dart, follow the same steps for the other one.
- 5). Try on the dress to make sure it fits properly. If it doesn't, remove the stitching, make the necessary adjustments to the dress or the pattern, and redo it.
