How to Propagate Fuchsia
- 1). Prepare the fuchsia plant. Pick a good, healthy plant from which to propagate. It should have a green stem with a good root system, green leaves and several stems on the main stem that are growing fairly low.
- 2). Fertilize the plant once each week for two to three weeks before propagating.
- 3). Prepare the 3-inch container by filling it near the top with potting soil.
- 4). Water the soil to ensure that it is moist. The soil that is used must be a moist, free-draining soil. To make sure that the soil is moist throughout, sit the container in water and let the water soak through the bottom.
- 5). Cut the stem from the existing fuchsia plant above a leaf node with a sharp knife; the stem should be 4 inches long. The leaf node is a part of the stem where at least two leaves are sprouting from the stem. Handle the cutting by the leaves, being careful not to do any damage.
- 6). Trim the cutting directly below the third set of leaves.
- 7). Poke a hole in the soil with a pencil and place the cutting inside the hole until it reaches the first set of leaves; the stem should be 1 inch into the soil. Make sure that the leaves are not touching the soil.
- 8). Press the soil around the cutting gently so that it is firmly in place.
- 9). Place the container in a plastic bag and set it in a lighted room to allow rooting to take place.
