How to Apply Pearl Paint

    • 1). Sand out scratches or other noticeable imperfections on the surface of the object with 240-grit sandpaper. When you apply the paint, these imperfections will only stand out more. You want to smooth out the surface before painting.

    • 2). Sand the rest of the surface with 320-grit sandpaper after you've smoothed out imperfections with the rougher 240-grit sandpaper.

    • 3). Wash the surface thoroughly using soap and water to remove dirt and leftover sandpaper dust.

    • 4). Wait for the surface to air dry.

    • 5). Prime the surface using a general-purpose primer and a sponge brush.

    • 6). Apply one coat of urethane paint to the surface using a spray gun or paintbrush. Only use regular, solid-colored paint; you do not want to use pearl paint for the initial base coat. If using a spray gun, hold the nozzle about 18 inches away from the surface. Spray guns are ideal for large objects, such as cars. For smaller items, it may be easier to use a paintbrush. Wait at least 15 minutes for the paint to dry.

    • 7). Mix pearl flakes into your urethane paint, following the pearl flake container's mixing directions exactly. Every manufacturer's product requires a different paint-to-pearl ratio. Pre-mixed pearl paints are also available at auto shops, hobby shops and art-supply stores.

    • 8). Apply the pearl paint mixture onto the object using a paintbrush or spray gun, once again holding the gun about 18 inches away from the surface. If the first coat does not provide enough iridescent shimmer, you can add a second coat of pearl paint after 15 minutes for additional shine.

    • 9). Wait at least two hours before handling the freshly painted object.
