How to Grow Carrots as a Houseplant
- 1). Obtain a full-grown carrot with the green leafy parts (the tops) still attached. Using a kitchen knife, cut a 2-inch piece off the vegetable. This section should be taken from the large end of the root (the orange edible part) and include the carrot tops.

Trim the tops of the carrots with scissors. After cutting, the greens should be approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in length. - 3). Place these pieces, cut side down, in a dish with water. The water should only cover half of the orange part of the carrot top. You may also choose to press the carrot into moist soil as an alternative to the water dish. If you want a bushier plant, place several carrot tops together in one dish.
- 4). Fill a planter with sandy soil or planter mix soil. When the carrot top starts growing roots and leaves, transplant it into the prepared planter. The roots should be completely covered with soil, while the tops will remain above the soil.
- 5). Water the carrot top immediately after planting. After the initial watering, add water regularly to maintain a moist soil. This plant will last approximately a season. When it dies, do not replant it as it will not bloom. Either throw it away or use it as an addition to a compost pile.
