Homemade Outside Camp Kitchen
- Diagram #1 pine framework for camping cupboard
Build your cupboard by making a rectangular box frame of pine boards (see diagram 1). Covering the box with lightweight plywood on the outside and pegboard on the inside is probably the best way to keep it manageable but still durable. Pegboard allows you to place hooks for pots and pans wherever you need them. If you attach a leather cord to all of your cooking utensils and pots and pans, they will be easier to hang.
The front of the cupboard should fold down and double as a counter-top workspace, so make sure you attach it to the box with extra chains and sturdy hinges. Covering the workspace with a counter-top laminate sheet or even contact paper for easier cleanup is also a good idea. - Diagram #2 inside the cupboard
A small drawer built inside of the cupboard that will fit a silverware tray will keep the eating utensils organized. You can build a simple drawer out of luan and drill two finger holes to pull the drawer in and out. (See Diagram 2)
Enhancing your cupboard with items like a paper towel holder, wall rack for plates and even an attached swinging style can opener will make your cupboard more efficient.
To save space, fill your dishpan with all of the things used for cleaning up around your kitchen and don't forget to pack some matches into a plastic waterproof container too. - Being able to carry your cupboard from house to car and car to picnic table is essential, so be creative in finding ways to keep the cupboard light.
Remove cooking ingredients from their original packaging and place them in air tight zipper bags or plastic containers to free up space. This will also help to keep moisture and pests out.
Once you have designed and built your camping cupboard, you will enjoy the ease of having everything stocked and ready to go each time you decide to head out on a camping trip.
The following link at Mother Earth News also has a picture of a homemade camping kitchen which is similar to this one but perhaps a bit smaller. http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/1984-05-01/Make-A-Camping-Equipment-Holder.aspx#
