    Cutting

    • 1). Cut the selvedges off of both pieces of fabric. The selvedge is the side border area that usually shows information regarding printing or the manufacturer. These narrow strips might be the same color as the fabric or white. After trimming them away, the fabric will have four raw sides.

    • 2). Measure and mark the top fabric into three 91-inch increments; cut the fabric for the comforter top as marked.

    • 3). Measure and mark the bottom fabric into three 91-inch increments; cut the fabric for the comforter bottom as marked.

    • 4). Measure and mark the batting to 90 inches long; trim the excess. Since it is already 90 inches wide, you will have a square.

    Piecing

    • 1). Place two of the top pieces of fabric together, printed sides facing. Pin together along the left side.

    • 2). Stitch the two pieces of fabric together on the sewing machine, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Remove pins if they are in your way instead of sewing over them.

    • 3). Unfold the stitched top panels and flatten out.

    • 4). Place the remaining top panel on top of one of the stitched panels, printed sides of fabric facing.

    • 5). Pin the two fabric panels together along the side that is yet to be stitched.

    • 6). Stitch the two pinned pieces of fabric together on the sewing machine, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Be sure to remove pins if they are in your way instead of sewing over them.

    • 7). Open the folded fabric and smooth out. Flip to the back side and finger press both seam allowances to one side. Either side is fine as long as the seam is flat. This completes the top portion of the comforter.

    • 8). Follow the same steps for the pieces of fabric that will make the bottom of the comforter.

    Sandwiching

    • 1). Lay the bottom of the comforter on a large flat surface, printed side down. Smooth out any wrinkles.

    • 2). Lay the batting on top of the bottom layer. Smooth out any wrinkles and center the batting on the back side of the comforter.

    • 3). Place the comforter top, printed side up, on the batting and smooth it out. Carefully center the top of the comforter on the batting.

    • 4). Trim the sides of both the top and bottom fabrics to be 1 inch larger than the batting.Trimming the sides will result in top and bottom fabrics that are 91 inches square.

    • 5). Pin all three layers together around the edges and in the middle of the comforter.

    Sewing

    • 1). Use the seams where the top fabric was pieced together as a sewing guide; you will sew the comforter together along those seams. Make stitches along the entire length of the seams, stopping where the batting ends.

    • 2). Fold one edge of the comforter toward the back, making a 1/2-inch fold. To cover the raw edge, fold the edge over again toward the back. Pin the fold in place. Repeat for the other three sides to create an even edge hem all the way around the comforter. No raw edges will be seen. This is called a self-binding edge.

    • 3). Stitch around the self binding edge of the comforter, removing pins as you sew. When all the pins have been removed, the comforter is ready for use.
