Is Cherrybark Oak a Good Shade Tree?
- Cherrybark oak grows best in regions with a hot, humid summer and mild winter, such as in USDA plant hardiness zones 6 through 9a. Although somewhat drought tolerant, this tree prospers where between 45 to 60 inches of precipitation occurs annually.
- A cherrybark oak potentially grows to great size, from 100 to 130 feet in height. The spreading branches but overall rounded canopy shape mature to 50 to 80 feet wide. The trunk diameter measures 3 to 5 feet, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
- The USDA notes that cherrybark oak grows best on loamy soils with an acidic pH (below 7.0). It tolerates clay soils as long as they are moist and do not become soggy. Plant it where it receives at least 10 hours of direct sunlight daily.
