    • 1). Open Adobe Photoshop. Click "File" and click "New" from the dropdown menu. Type "500" in the width field and "300" in the height field. Click "OK" to create the new image. Double click on the background layer in the layers palette. Click "OK" to unlock the background and make it editable.

    • 2). Double click "Layer 0" in the layers palette to open the "Layer Style" window. Click the "Gradient Overlay" option in the left hand "Styles" navigation menu of the "Layer Style" window.

    • 3). Click the gradient color bar to open the "Gradient Editor" menu. Click three or four different styles under the "Presets" heading and preview the changes to the image in the Photoshop workspace. Click and drag the "Color Stop" pointers on the gradient time line to change the placement of gradient color.

    • 4). Double click on the "Color Stop" pointer. Click and drag the color selector tool around to find a color that compliments the gradient. Press "OK" when finished to close the "Stop color select" window and apply changes. Press "OK" to close the "Gradient Editor" window and apply changes. Press "OK" to close the "Layer Style" window and apply the gradient to the background layer.

    • 5). Press and hold the "Shift" and "Ctrl" keys on your keyboard and press the "S" key to open the "Save As..." window. Type "gradient_background" in the "File name" field and press the "Save" button to save your gradient background.
