Theme

• Determine your theme. The theme gives you guidelines on which colors to use for paints and finishes on the wall, fabric and furniture. An art deco room requires a sleek design and lots of reflective surfaces while a cottage decor brings in soft creamy white furniture and lots of touchable fabric. Use teal, blue or tan colors for an ocean theme, but a garden theme emphasizes bright greens, dusty rose and sage. A jungle theme incorporates animal prints in the decor, such as leopard spots or striped zebras.
  
  

Headboard

• Use the headboard to make a statement in the room. Upholster the headboard in a vibrant bold color or graphic print chosen by the teen, or go for a soft romantic look by draping netting from the ceiling around the headboard. Use an economical headboard consisting of an old door propped sideways attached to the wall that you can paint or upholster. For bedrooms with minimal space, use paint to create a headboard; apply 12 x 12-inch mirror tiles to the wall, or frame an interesting piece of fabric and hang it for a headboard.
  
  

Placement

• Where you place the bed dramatically impacts the space even in a large room. Although you may want to place the headboard opposite the door, the main criteria for bed placement is the size of the wall. A larger bed, such as a queen, requires space to walk around it and to add nightstands or a table, so the optimum placement would be against the largest wall. Another option is pushing the bed diagonally into a corner, giving the teen space on each side, or between two windows, giving the teen lots of natural light.
  
  

Bedding

• Make the bed comfortable even in a sleek or minimalist design. Pick up several sheet sets with a high thread count, natural fabric and in the theme colors. Add a skirt between the mattress and box spring to allow hidden shoe storage under the bed. Dress an old comforter with a brand new silk duvet as it allows you to keep the same comforter but get a new look, Naturally, you can purchase a down comforter for the duvet instead. Place pillows into decorative shams and add a neck roll.
