    • 1). Determine the size of your quilt and purchase the fabric to complete your quilt. To make a twin size quilt you will need approximately four yards of assorted fabrics for the quilt top and four yards for the backing and binding.

    • 2). Plan the size and arrangement of the squares you will make. For example, you could make an attractive quilt out of six-inch squares of the sporting print and the solid fabrics with the squares alternating along the rows.

    • 3). Cut the squares according to your design in step 2. Press the fabrics and fold them with selvages together. Place the fabric on the cutting mat and use the quilting ruler and the rotary cutter to cut out squares that are uniform in size and shape. Cut carefully to make sure that all of your squares are accurately cut.

    • 4). Lay out the squares in the pattern you designed.

    • 5). Begin to sew the rows of squares together using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Sew each row together first and press each seam to one side as you sew.

    • 6). Sew the rows together matching the seams. Press the seams to one side.

    • 7). Add borders to the quilt if desired.

    • 8). Piece the backing if necessary to make the backing piece the same size as the quilt top.

    • 9). Cut a batting piece to the same size as the backing and the quilt top.

    • 10

Lay out the backing piece with the wrong side up. Place the batting piece on top of the backing piece. Place the quilt top on top of the batting with the right side facing up. Align all edges and corners.

Pin the quilt layers in place with safety pins placed every few inches across the entire quilt.

Machine quilt the quilt carefully by stitching along each seam line of the quilt top. Alternatively, you could tie the quilt with yarn in the intersections of the quilt blocks. This is simply done by threading a yarn needle with yarn and inserting the needle into the quilt top from above, taking a small stitch with the needle and coming back up on top of the quilt. Cut the yarn off at a few inches and tie the yarn in a double knot.

Bind the edges of the quilt when it is completely quilted to finish the quilt.
