How to Identify Diamonds

    • 1). Look for flaws. Diamond stand-ins like cubic zirconia do not have flaws. If you cannot see any interior inclusions in a stone, then it is almost certainly not a diamond. Almost all diamonds have at least one interior inclusion that is unique to that stone.

    • 2). Check for sharp corners. Diamonds are used to cut some of the hardest substances in the world because they hold a sharp edge better than almost any other medium. If a stone has rounded points instead of sharp facets, then that stone is likely a fake. It is difficult to nearly impossible to wear away the corners of a real diamond.

Part of your diamond certificate will include indications of locations of identifying marks

Ask an independent jeweler for a diamond diagram. If you bought a certified diamond, then it probably came with such a diagram. However, if the diamond was a gift it is likely that you do not have access to this important paper. A diamond diagram illustrates exactly where your diamond's unique anomalies and irregularities are located. Responsible jewelers will go over this diagram with you before you leave your stone in their keeping and again when you retrieve your jewelry. If a jeweler is reluctant to do this, then you should reconsider leaving your jewelry in their care.

Many people engrave engagement rings with romantic sayings or a special message for their loved one. These also act as easily identifiable markers.

Have your diamond laser engraved. Many jewelers can use a laser to engrave the thin edge of a diamond with a special saying, a serial number or your name. This engraving is impossible to see without a jeweler's lens and is nearly impossible to replicate exactly.
