How to Design Your Own Crochet Patterns

103 9
In order to design your own crochet patterns you have to have at least a basic understanding of how crochet works; you should know how the stitches work together to form different shapes, how to increase and how to decrease.
You should also know how to read patterns, because you will have to write down your pattern as you go.
It really is not hard, it just takes some patience and lots of practice.
The more practice you have at designing the easier it will become.
Start off be designing something small and simple like a dish cloth, or an afghan square.
These are very straight forward and easy to make, and if you change your mind, or if something does not look right you can always undo it, and start over in a matter of minutes.
As your designing skills increase you can venture into designing clothes and other items which require proper sizing, or a unique shape.
A gauge can be very helpful in determining the finished size of the garment, and also will help you figure out whether or not your stitch pattern will work.
A gauge is also essential for those who will be recreating your pattern, so they can figure out what size they need.
When designing clothes where size is important, be sure to take all measurements before you begin your design.
This will save you a lot of time in the end as you will have a measurement to work towards.
Use a crochet template if designing a pattern that requires a certain shape or form like clothing articles.
Templates can be made from old clothes, and sewing patterns can also be used.
If you are designing something totally new and you don't have something to go by, then you can simply make your own drawing, or at least have a good visual picture in your head of what it will look like.
Then as you begin to crochet your new design, write it down at each step so that you will remember how to do it the second time around.
Always make at least two copies of your design; your original, and then the second to check your work to make sure that you don't have any errors.
You can also get others to double check the pattern for you, especially if it is a larger pattern, or if you have worked at it for long hours.
It is amazing how many errors a fresh set of eyes can find.
If designing your own crochet patterns is something that interests you then by all means give it a go.
Even if you have to undo the pattern numerous times, it will become more natural as you complete more designs.
